  • A light source projects white light onto a combination of mirrors that split the light into its three basic video colors.
  • Each LCD chip takes the electrical signal it receives and creates an image.
  • The three color images are combined using a prism to form a full-color image consisting of millions of colors.
  • The vibrant, full-color image passes through a lens and is projected onto a screen.

Color Light Output (Color Brightness)

With the fast-paced development of high-definition, rich color video and projection content, the quality and impact of the color produced by a projector have become extremely important. Until now, buyers and users have had no way to determine if their projector is capable of producing rich, vivid color. Color Light Output or Color Brightness addresses this issue.

Color Light Output (Color Brightness) is a new standard that gives buyers the data they need to compare projectors. Brightness has long been the specification used for projector comparisons; however, the old specification measured only White Light Output. The vast majority of the projectors today project color, so measuring White Light Output or White Brightness alone is insufficient. Color Light Output or Color Brightness gives projector buyers the data they need and have been missing.

The Color Light Output standard was published in May 2012. This new specification applies to all displays, including projectors for business, education or home. It clearly shows a major difference among projectors and for the first time, it gives end users scientific data with which to compare color. Leading manufacturers have adopted the standard in their product specification to help projector buyers. They now include two measurements — White Brightness (White Light Output) and Color Brightness (Color Light Output).

Projector buyers should look for and demand both numbers — White Brightness (White Light Output) and Color Brightness (Color Light Output). For optimum visual experience, make sure Color Light Output (Color Brightness) is equal to White Light Output (White Brightness).

Radius Global Market Research, a leading worldwide market research firm conducted a quantitative preference study for Epson. The preference study2included side-by-side comparisons of 3LCD and 1-chip DLP projectors with similar resolution and white brightness specifications. The results show that 9 out of 10 people prefer images from 3LCD projectors, which deliver up to 3x higher Color Brightness than comparable 1-Chip DLP models1. 9 out of 10 respondents preferred the image from a 3LCD projector over 1-chip DLP, and of those, 87 percent strongly preferred 3LCD images.

Understanding Brightness and Color

Current product specifications such as Brightness (or White Light Output), Contrast Ratio and Resolution give no information regarding a projector’s ability to reproduce color.

3-Chip Technology

3LCD projectors use 3 chips in EVERY projector. With its 3-chip design, 3LCD delivers clear and vibrant images, so true-to-life you may not believe your eyes.

In contrast to 3-chip 3LCD projectors, 1-chip DLP projectors use a rotating color wheel that spins at a rapid speed, only displaying colors sequentially, which can result in color break-up or the “rainbow effect”.
